As technology has evolved, the once-popular television armoire is disappearing from American homes. What’s new in home entertainment storage and display? Take a look.
Consoles. Many consumers are opting to display televisions on top of a cabinet or hang them on a wall. Consoles work well in either scenario. They offer convenient hidden storage for your electronic equipment, cords, and media. Consider the style of your room, the amount of storage you need, and the size of your space. If you’re going to place your television on top of the unit, make sure the console is longer than the width of your television and sturdy enough to handle the weight of the TV. Hidden cord management systems are a helpful bonus.
Built-in unit. If you have a larger space or want to splurge, a built-in unit can make a wonderful statement. These large, multifunctional furniture pieces tend to offer lots of functionality and features. Many units come with design features that hide your television when it’s not in use. Others include hidden cord management, integrated outlets, and adjustable shelving for books, art, or other display. Some even feature murphy beds and built-in computer desks.These wall units come in a variety of styles or you can work with a carpenter for a custom design, but keep in mind that they can to be expensive.
Hidden. The television-free family room is another current design trend. With smart televisions, wireless internet, digital movie libraries, and show streaming, you may find that you have few (or no) components to store. If you want to disguise your television when it’s not in use, consider hiding it behind a piece of removable art, a two-way mirror, or even a vintage map that raises and lowers easily. If you can’t hide your flat screen completely, minimize its appearance by making a gallery wall around it with framed art, or consider hanging it on a dark wall. Don’t forget to properly mount the TV, using wall studs and hardware that is strong enough to handle the weight of the equipment. Another option is to switch to a projector. If you’re considering this, remember you’ll need a flat, white wall or a screen for best viewing.
