Decorating trends come and go, often returning yet again with a reinvented look. So how do you know which trends to keep and which to discard? Keep reading for some thoughts and tips.
Decorating trends to discard
- For many years, kitchen remodels included elaborate vent fans over the stove. However, fans were never intended to be pretty, merely functional, and designs are moving back to incorporating exhaust into cabinetry.
- Pastels and watercolors come and go, and right now, they’re on their way out. For your artwork, opt to swap out watercolors with an on-trend piece while keeping these stored. They might come back in style again down the road.
- While giving a simple, clean vibe, white-on-white is out mainly due to its impracticality: it’s next to impossible to keep clean! It also does not show any of your personality. For a different neutral backdrop, think of using greys, tans, or beiges in layers and adding bright colors as accents.
- Remember those Tuscan themes of the early 2000s with a color palette of deep reds and golds, bronze lighting fixtures and cabinet hardware, and oversized furniture? The style gives off a feeling of heaviness with lots of ornate details and just looks … well, dated.
Coming back around
- The gold fixtures of the 1980s are back, with finishes ranging from polished to satin/brushed to antique.
- More families are sitting down to dinners in a more formal dining room again, meaning traditional style is seeing a comeback. When used in furnishings, make sure to layer with other styles to keep it from dominating or looking dated.
- Still, among the top choices of cabinet finish, white cabinets don’t seem to lose their appeal. Gloss-white appliances are making an appearance and are expected to rival stainless steel in sales and popularity.
- Made famous in the 1960s, pop art reappeared in the ‘80s and is once again in vogue. If you have some in storage, take them out and hang them again.

Participating in trends can be fun, but keeping up with them is a never-ending task. In general, when a trend becomes so prevalent that you see it everywhere, it likely will not last long as consumers and designers tire of it and want something fresh. Mix trendy pieces in with your standard décor to enjoy the latest fads without spending lots of money.
