Landing zones and mudrooms seem to rank high in popularity with today’s families. But how do you make a functional and great-looking space that your family actually uses? It’s easy, when you follow these eight simple tips.
Seating is key. One of the most important elements every mudroom or landing zone needs is a bench or seat for removing shoes and setting down packages. Benches with storage space underneath are ideal. If you’re limited to a small nook in an entryway, a small accent chair works wonderfully.
Hang it up. Kids aren’t the best at hanging coats on hangers so be sure to provide plenty of hooks in a mudroom. They work well for jackets, backpacks, and keys. Think carefully about the heights of your hooks, making them accessible for everyone. Use multiple rows of hooks at different levels to utilize vertical space. Also, buy the appropriate kind of hooks. Small screw-in hooks work well for lighter items like keys and scarves, but you’ll need well-anchored heavy-duty hooks for backpacks or purses.
Keep it neat. With all the items busy families keep in their mudrooms, it’s no surprise that these spaces can get messy. Closed containers like baskets and bins are a great way to store everything and keep your space looking uncluttered. If your mudroom still gets messy, consider adding doors to your storage unit or even the room itself.
Space for everyone. A great way to ensure your mudroom gets used and stays organized is to give all family members their own spots. If you have the room, individual cubbies provide space and separation. While custom furniture units are great for this, they aren’t necessary. You can buy (or make) simple cubes and stack them on top of each other. When making storage space for everyone, don’t forget about your pets. A mudroom is an excellent place to keep leashes, pet food and bowls, and even litter boxes.
Get charged. Since we all take our phones with us when we leave the house, a charging station in your mudroom or entryway adds real convenience. A shelf or drawer with drilled holes in the back for cables can keep all your electronics together and hide unsightly cords.
Add style. Even though your landing zone or mudroom is a functional space, it should still be stylish. Choose fabrics that coordinate with other colors and textiles in adjacent rooms. Higher sheen paints work well in mudrooms because they are easier to clean.
Be creative. Your landing zone doesn’t have to be elaborate or expensive to work well. Think about repurposing a piece of furniture. An old dresser or bookshelf with a fresh coat of paint and labels can make a stylish storage system. Pair it with a set of wall hooks.
Include extras. Once you’ve got a place for everything, it’s time to add finishing touches. A chalkboard will help everyone keep track of family schedules. Add a mirror for ambience, extra light, and a quick style check before leaving the house.
