Cherry pie is the unofficial dessert of Washington’s Birthday, drawing from the legend of young Washington chopping down a cherry tree.
Presidents’ Day has had various designations. Originally it celebrated George Washington’s birthday on February 22. In the 20th Century, Abraham Lincoln’s birthday on February 12 was also noted, as well as paying respect to all presidents.
The third Monday of February was officially designated as Presidents’ Day in 1971, which means it never actually falls on either Washington’s or Lincoln’s birthday. Some states still refer to it as Washington’s Birthday, or Washington and Lincoln Day.
How will you be remembered? Great leaders such as Washington and Lincoln are long remembered because of the legacy they created. Here are a couple ways to use your home to leave a lasting legacy.
- Eat dinner together. Meals together create a bond that last a lifetime.
- Make use of family photos and memorabilia to honor your family history and pass that knowledge to children. Display photos using walls and shelves or, consider a more modern approach, an electronic photo display such as Nixplay that rotates hundreds of digital photos through a classic photo frame.
