Labor Day: Celebrating the American Worker

The National Education Association, the union for teachers and school administrators, is the largest union with more than three million members.

In 1894 President Grover Cleveland signed the law making the first Monday of September the federally recognized holiday known as Labor Day.

End of summer, beginning of fall. Although seasonally still part of summer, Labor Day in America traditionally marks the end of summertime and the beginning of school.

Prep your house for fall and winter. Labor Day also signals it’s time to start prepping your home for crisp temperatures and fall events.

  • Check window caulk and door weather stripping. Summer heat and increased activity may have caused wear and tear.
  • Plant fall colors in your landscape. Chrysanthemums are a versatile choice, offering yellows, orange and rust hues. Pansies present rich colors as an alternative.  This is also a great time to plant a fall garden and bulbs for spring tulips, crocus and hyacinths.
  • Store summer equipment such as beach chairs and croquet sets.
