New Year’s Day: Looking Back, Looking Forward

January takes its name from the ancient Roman god Janus, god of beginnings. He was illustrated as having two faces, one front and one back. Thus he could see forward and backward simultaneously.

The calendar for Western Civilization didn’t originally begin on January 1, but on March 1. January 1st was the day that new Roman officials were sworn into office. Eventually the Romans aligned the start of the new year to coincide with that ceremony.

It’s a new year for your home too!  As a homeowner, use January 1 as a time of looking back on what you accomplished with your house. Then, set goals for the fresh year ahead.

Use the new year to get motivated! Here are three suggestions for ringing in positive change at home.

  1. Perform your own “green” audit. Make sure your attic has 14 inches of insulation if you live in a southern state and 18 inches if you live up north. Inspect the caulking and seals around windows and doors, replacing what is worn and missing. Install dual-flush toilets and water-saving faucets. Inspect your house for ways to save the earth and save money.
  2. How’s your drive-up appeal? Step to the curb and see your home as a visitor does. A fresh spring landscape would add charm. Greet visitors with a new front door or a refinish of your existing one. When the weather warms, give your house a fresh coat of paint.
  3. Which rooms need a makeover? Is this the year you update the kitchen? Maybe a new sectional in the living room could accommodate more guests. Is it time for new window treatments? How about converting your master bath into a restful retreat with new seamless shower glass, tile, counters and faucets? Tour your home and envision the possibilities!
