Turning Back the Clock: Returning to Standard Time

Nations located along the equator see little benefit to Daylight Saving Time since the difference in the number of daylight versus dark hours varies little.

For the rest of us, it’s good to remember to “spring forward, and fall back.” You’ll lose an hour of sleep in the spring and gain an hour in the fall.

Real ways to save energy

Turning clocks back in the fall is a good time to start prepping your home for the coming winter.

  • Check the insulation in your attic. Insulation should be 14 inches deep if you live in southern states, and 18 inches if you live in the northern tier.
  • Install a smart thermostat that allows you to precisely schedule temperature levels in your home with a phone app.
  • For the holidays, replace strings of old, incandescent lights with LEDs that will last many years and use much less energy.
